Blue and mrated,

Just got of the phone with 2K, try going ino Bioshock settings and turn off Reverb and Creative EAX Audio.

I appears only Vista 64-bit is the issue now, XP and 32 Vista users can correct the issue with compatibility mode. I am avidly working with 2K Games to find a fix for the 64-bi problem, so any additional details you find out in the meantime would be helpful.

I asked myself earlier today why I am spending so much time helping others solve this technical problem, and the answer came to me quickly. Bioshock is one hell of a game, it would be an absolute shame if ANYONE missed out on it because of some silly Direct Sound issues.

2K technical support let me know this morning that they just found the compatibility fix and were starting to add it to their phone support answers.

It also seems that 2K has officially acknowledged the Widescrren issue, and is working on a patch to correct this. The team went as far as to thank a game community member on the Rapture website, and they are even giving him an 8800 video card as thanks for helping out with the bug.

I don't want a video card from them, but it sure would be nice if an official word would come from this problem, rather than me spending personal time to help gamers who buy/download it! Wink

I suspect we will hear something official as early as Monday.....

Now that I have some free time to wait, I think I will work on a Bioshock review this weekend for anyone interested.

Thanks again for your tireless efforts 'Smaug! It's 1:30am here and I just got back from an engagement party and saw the message about the reverb and EAX. I already had EAX off but turned the reverb off also but unfortunately, still no audio after the plane crash. Sad

The weird thing is the audio is perfect up until the Bioshock logo fades out (ie. when you're in the water).

Aye, and for that exact reason is why I am focused on DirectSound. The movie has sound, but the game won't load it. This is an interesting problem to be sure.

I was having the no-sound after entering the water issue as well in Vista x64. I have an ASUS P5KC w/6GB RAM and an ATI Radeon X1900XTX.

I tried the other suggestions in this thread to no avail, and then tried two more things:

1. Switching my account to an Administrator (I was running as a standard user account).
2. Updated the ATI Drivers to 7.8 for Vista (64 bit)

This didn't help. However, when I rebooted, I was able to get sound!

My hunch is that it is the Administrator account that did it. When I started the game after the reboot, for the first time I got a UAC dialog for "SecureRom Explorer Extension" (or something similar). After proceeding, the game worked with sound.

Now I just have to figure out why the display went wonky about 10 minutes into the game (requiring a reset of the machine *ouch*).

I hope this helps with your diagnoses.

Edit: Video is crashing after I enter the game now. Rolled back to previous drivers and still get the crash. Investigating further.

I've been running as Admin ever since installing but I have a nVidia 8600GT vid card which I grabbed the lastest drivers for the other day...

My setup:
Intel Q6600 CPU, P5K mobo, 4GB RAM, 8600GT (as mentioned above) and Vista 64... as far as I'm aware everything has up-to-date drivers (I only checked 2 days ago). Sad

Well, my video driver update proved to NOT be a good idea. Now I crash every time I enter the game. Rolling back must not have gotten rid of the offending component.

I guess now I can restore Vista from the backup I made right before installing BioShock, or just wait for updated ATI drivers. I've already wasted 4 hours of my life trying to get this damn game to run. I think I'll go upstairs and play the BioShock Demo on my 360. *sigh*

Edit: I'm running a Q6600 as well. At stock speeds.

OK, I think I've got it. I found a hotfix on ATI's site for Bioshock here. So I reapplied the latest ATI drivers, then the hotfix. That alone didn't seem to help, then I discovered the following two MS hotfixes for Vista:

KB938194

- and -

KB938979

These are NOT installed automatically by Windows update, but they (938194 in particular) seem to help several gaming-related issues. If you don't have these, get them -- I installed both of these and it worked (I rebooted after each install).

To recap everything I did:

1. Set codec to 16-bit 44,100Hz
2. Set compatibility mode to XP SP2
3. Changed my account to an administrator
4. Updated to latest ATI drivers.

(at this point, after rebooting, my sound worked)

5. Applied ATI Bioshock hotfix.
6. Installed the two hotfixes.

(this fixed my video glitches caused by the driver upgrade).

Sorry I don't have more scientific results. I was trying a lot of hunches that may or may not have worked. I tried to capture everything I did that may have mattered.

Edit: I'm running the latest Realtek HD drivers from Realtek's site.

I tried both those hotfixes to no avail. In fact after installing and rebooting of the second hotfix Bioshock gave me a beautiful BSOD!!!

I'm downloading beta drivers from nVidia at the moment (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_163.44.html)... hopefully that helps.

I seem to have a problem that nobody else has stumbled on yet, and I was hoping for some input...

I run 32-bit Vista on my PC and have all the normal sound issues, and when I run the game in XP SP2 emulation it does in fact give me sound. Hooray!

However it creates a new problem. When I run the game in XP compatibility, I get horrible I/O lag. I can't use the keyboard and mouse at the same time, and it's a bit tough to play the game if you can't move and shoot together. And on top of that, after any movement related keypress and release, the release portion won't register until around 5 seconds later. During which I can't use the mouse. Like sliding around on ice in oldschool platformers. Any ideas?
